Shop Foreman

Star Equipment, Ltd is seeking a working Shop Foreman at our Des Moines location, 1401 2nd Ave. We are a 3rd generation family-owned Iowa company that was founded in 1968. Star Equipment has grown to 85 employees in 4 Iowa locations; Des Moines, Cedar Rapids, Waterloo and Ames. Our equipment ranges from small generators and concrete saws, to skidloaders and forklifts, to concrete pumps and crane trucks.

Are you a mechanic who is read to take on some additional responsibility as a working Shop Foreman? The ideal applicant should be a self starter with 2 years experience in diesel, small engine, and hydraulic experience on construction equipment. However, we are willing to train the right candidate. Paid technician training could be in-house or at service schools for major brands of equipment that we carry.

Shop Foreman Responsibilities

• Perform with minimum supervision equipment repairs in a timely manner.
• Work with mechanics and service manager to schedule work
• Supervise and train mechanics
• Insure all safety procedures are followed and that fellow employees do the same.
• Trouble shoot problems on all equipment using test equipment, tools, service manuals and service bulletins.
• Utilize all departmental reference materials, service and parts manuals as needed to complete the job.
• Continually study and upgrade proficiency in construction equipment trouble shooting and repair.
• Keep your paperwork up-to-date at all times, personal and company (CDL - Physical Card - Log Books - Time Sheets).
• Think your job through and do it the best and most efficient way possible.
• Learn to operate construction equipment for diagnostics and repair.
• Own enough hand tools to facilitate completion of job tasks.

Personal Qualifications

• Construction equipment mechanical experience preferred
• Foreman/ Supervisor experience
• Demonstrate high degree of proficiency in construction equipment repair.
• Ability to read and use reference materials, both on paper and on computer.
• Ability to lift 100 lbs.
• We are open 7a.m. to 5 p.m. Mon-Fri, 8-noon Saturday (except for Winter)
• Ability to work as part of a team.

We are a 3rd generation family-owned Iowa company that was founded in 1968. Star Equipment has grown to 80 employees in 4 Iowa locations; Des Moines, Cedar Rapids, Waterloo and Ames. However, this position will be focusing on smaller engine equipment such as generators, concrete saws, power buggies, water pumps, plate compactors, light towers, mixers, and more.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Answer rental phone calls courteously and professionally. Help customers find the right tool for their job. Obtain as much information as possible to properly and fully fill out paperwork.
• Create rental contracts timely and accurately, being sure to get all the customer and jobsite information on it.
• Be aware of equipment availability and condition; analyze general condition of equipment and schedule for preventive maintenance, minor repairs in department or send to service (keep check status), prepare units for use, checking for overall proper working condition.
• Coordinate with yard personnel to pull together orders timely and accurately.
• Dispatch deliveries in the most efficient way making the best use of driver’s time. Know where the drivers are and be able to estimate time of next delivery for customer.
• Organize equipment transfers between branch locations
• Help maintain inventory management. Receive incoming machines, warehousing, inventory, and maintain identification tags.
• Continually self-train to stay up to date on equipment and be able to trouble shoot with customers over the phone.
• Department housekeeping; maintain a clean workspace, organized work top, clean floors, counter tops, and doors. Help keep a clean/organized shop.
• Check in rental equipment. Inspect, clean, and grease machines to get ready to rent.

PERSONAL QUALIFICATIONS:

• Be a self-starter – see what needs to be done and handle without being told to do so.
• Courteous personality with good phone mannerism.
• Knowledge of construction equipment, operation and capability, with ability to solve problems.
• Be able to organize and motivate personnel.
• Above average computer skills.
• Clean driving record with valid license
