Heavy Equipment Operator Checklist

Jul. 22 2022 Tips By Star Equipment

Heavy equipment operation can be dangerous and inefficient if done incorrectly. That’s why we’ve put together a heavy equipment operator checklist to help you avoid hazardous situations and promote jobsite safety.

Inspect your systems before beginning work

One of the most important heavy equipment operator tips is to check all the key systems before you start using the machine.

  • Brakes – Ensure the service brake systems, parking brakes, and emergency brake systems are all fully functional and in good condition.
  • Windshield – Inspect the windshield for cracks or chips to fix them before they become worse. Plus, try out the wiper blades to make sure they are working well.
  • Horns and lights – Test your horn and check the headlights, taillights, and brake lights before beginning heavy equipment operation.
  • Worn or broken components – Defective parts must be repaired or replaced before heading to the jobsite.

Check for site hazards

Evaluate your work area, roadways, and all parts of the jobsite to ensure they are free from obstructions and well built and maintained to take the weight of your heavy equipment. Look out for stumps, large rocks, steep slopes, unstable ground, and avoid operating your machines under overhead wires.

Make sure you have the right machine features

All your heavy equipment should have protection for rollovers and falling debris. If the machine loads from the top, you want to use cab shields or canopies to protect the heavy equipment operator. Modification of safety features or equipment capacity must receive written approval from the machine’s manufacturer.

Proper training is crucial

Each heavy equipment operator requires training for the specific machine they will be operating. They should be able to recognize any defective parts, abnormal operation, or unsafe jobsites.
